University of Minnesota Department of Surgery
The Department of Surgery at the
University of Minnesota maintains a long-standing tradition of excellence in training academic surgeons who pursue basic and translational surgical research, in addition to producing innovative surgical therapies. The residency and fellowship training programs consistently recruit superb individuals who are trained to excel in clinical care, operative techniques, basic and clinical research, and education. Faculty and trainees have had considerable, wide-ranging impact in the fields of biology and clinical medicine, often leading to significant advances in patient care.
The Department of Surgery maintains its strong commitment to the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery. Minimally invasive surgical education opportunities are now available and are incorporated into the general surgical residency education program. Through partnerships with industry, fellowships have been established which are exclusively devoted to this surgical specialty.
In 2003, the department purchased the da Vinci® Surgical System. This robotic system is used exclusively for research and training endeavors and is housed within the department's renowned Experimental Surgical Services laboratory. This robotic system, in conjunction with a second da Vinci System owned by
University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, has allowed the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery to be named The Midwest Training Center in Surgical Robotics.
