Thoracoscopic sympathectomy

Patients with a condition known as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating of the hands, face, feet, and underarms) may benefit from interuption of the sympathetic nerve chain within the chest. The sympathetic nerve chain is a thin nerve (1-2 mm diameter) which runs next to the spine. By placing clips on the chain, inserted through two 5 mm holes below the breast, the sweating impulse is interrupted and sweating eradicated. This procedure is done on both sides at the same time and patients are discharged on the same day as surgery.
