Complex lung resections such as removal of a lobe or even the entire lung are possible through three incisions 1 cm long and an additional incision 4 cm long, through which the lung piece is removed. By not removing or spreading ribs, and with such small incisions, the normal degree of postoperative pain with an open rib-spreading procedure is dramatically reduced, and patients recover much more quickly.
