Thoracoscopic spinal surgery

Thoracoscopic spine surgery has more indications but is less common. Here the surgeon gets to the front of the spine using a videoscope and a series of small holes called ports. Some thoracic disc herniations can be removed this way, some scoliosis releases can be done this way, much less commonly scoliosis fusions. There are other limited indications as well. Since these reasons for surgery are so varied, the recovery is very variable as well. We also do limited incision open surgery techniques called a muscle sparing thoracotomy. This lessens the tissue damage and muscle injury associated with surgery in the front of the thoracic spine.
