Permanent and reversible sterilization including the recently introduced Essure® intra-tubal sterilization technique

Permanent sterilization is among the most frequently performed operations in the Untied States. There are many techniques described for this procedure, but most simply involve removing a portion of the fallopian tube and closing the interveneing ends, thus providing a barrier between sperm and egg. These techniques are highly effective and are usually performed on an outpatient basis. Permanent sterilization techniques can, under unsual circumstances, be surgically reversed but successful reversal is difficult and expensive.

For women desiring non-hormonal, non-permanent sterilization an intrauterine device (IUD) can be placed during an office visit. This is also a highly effective technique for preventing undesired pregnancy.
