Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass

The Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a modification of an operation first described by Edward Mason in the 1960s. The laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass probably is the most common bariatric procedure performed today in the United States. In total 140,000 bariatric procedures will be performed this year as estimated in the New England Journal of Medicine. We have performed the gastric bypass since 2001 and our surgeons have performed this laparoscopically since 1997. Our surgeons were amongst the first in the country to be doing this procedure. The operation involves making a small gastric pouch out of the stomach using endoscopic staplers and then bypassing a variable portion of the intestine to remove the stomach from the flow of food. This creates a sense of fullness in many people and a sense of satiety with very dramatic weight loss results.
